Earthology

Earthology

The boundary bustin’ crew at Stones Throw/Now Again do it again by releasing the Whitefield Brothers heavily anticipated Earthology - an album that is already being hailed as a ‘Psych Funk Masterpiece’. To their credit the Whitefield Brothers (Jan and Max - the Munich-born founders of deep-funk pioneers The Poets of Rhythm) appear to have invested a dizzying amount of global research in this project. The musical building blocks they employed on their 2001 cult classic In The Raw remain. Bass, drums, guitar, keys and a horn section – that’s the foundation of the Whitefield Brothers’ raw soul sound and on Earthology those instruments are skillfully applied by their allies from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, and the Dap-Kings. While In The Raw was The Meters meets Fela, Earthology is way more expansive. It seems that the duo have been travelling the world, jamming with different bands and ethnic ensembles, amassing a serious array of field recordings and diggin’ in those dusty crates. Along with embracing Ethiopiques-style melodies, modal Middle Eastern structures and more complex poly-rhythms, they have enhanced their sound palette with gongs and flutes from Asia, xylophones and string instruments from Africa and percussion instruments from Central America. The album also enlists performances from Edan, Mr. Lif, Quantic, Percee P, MED and Bajka but overall this enticing thirteen track offering is a raw but hypnotic, instrumentally orientated affair.
